Collection consists of the records of the Eye Institute at the Dartmouth Medical School; records relate to research completed by members of the Institute on disorders of the eye, particularly Aniseikonia. Collection contains monographs by members of the Institute, including Madigan's work, The measurement and correction of Aniseikonia (published as: The measurement and correction of Aniseikoni. -- Southbridge, Mass. : American Optical Company, c1942), lists of publications by members of the Institute, and bibliographic material. Collection also includes material relating to patents filed by the Institute or by Adelbert Ames and the agreement between the Institute and the American Optical Company about the patents. Includes material relating to vision tests, physiological optics, and perspective, as well as ophthalmological instruments and the testing of such instruments. Research notes, laboratory notes and observations, minutes of the meetings of the Eye Institute Research Committee, and general correspondence.

The Eye Institute at the Dartmouth Medical School was established as a research center for the study of the physiological optics, diseases and anomalies of the eye, and related clinical work. Its most important contributions to ophthalmology were the discovery of Aniseikonia and the development of methods of diagnosis and correction for this disorder.
